Vegetarian
food ingredients, which are responsible for the right tuning ,
functioning, or in other words, a balanced growth of the human
body and mind, are vitamins, minerals, starch, carbohydrates
and fibre, essential for the all-round development of human
being.
Vegetarian
foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, cereals, legumes and dairy
products - contain all the above energizing ingredients
essential for human body and building up its resistance base.
In
contrast, when we consider non-vegetarian food, besides producing degenerative symptoms in human physiology, it
contain considerable amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol and
is infect, very prone to many health problems.
The
argument put forward by many, that non-vegetarian food gives
more protein, is also a misleading conception. The fact is
that an excess of animal protein may lead to complications
like osteoporosis and cancer of the colon, among others.
Whereas, when we consider in totality, a vegetarian diet has
all the required food ingredients including, of course,
proteins, carbohydrates and natural fibre in a balanced
quantity.
The Three tables enumerated below elaborates the above

Vegetarian are falsely
alarmed about not getting sufficient protein but we are yet to
know of a diet consisting of natural foods, resulting in
protein deficiency, so long as we are not deficient in calories.
We need only six percent of protein of our daily
required total calories and it is practically impossible to get below
nine percent of calories in ordinary diets.
Many claim that in food-eggs, meat and fish have the highest
content of protein, whereas various experiments shows
that pulses, coarse grains, soybeans and nuts, among others,
have an even higher percentage of protein. All this argument notwithstanding, human body needs only 6 percent of protein whereas any
vegetarian recipe gives that minimum requirement. Besides, a
vegetarian diet contains a lot of fibre, is minus saturated
fat and cholesterol and is digestible in a less span of time comparatively. For
comparative study look at the nutritional
values of various food items given in the chart.
“There is little evidence to show that muscular activities increases
the need for extra protein. Dave scott and Sixto linares - the
acclaimed fittest men in the world, are both vegetarians.
Similarly, some very big names in the field of sports and athletes
- Edwin Moses, Mussay Rose, Paarvo Nurmi, Bill
Picking, Dara Singh, Gama, Milka Singh, P.T. Usha to name a
few, all lived on vegetarian diets. More so, in the field of
body building, as well, a Swede, Andrea Cahling, who was
adjudged Mr. International in 1980, is a confirmed vegetarian Similarly in India, Guru Hanuman is also a vegetarian. So
does the list goes on unveiling itself in an endless sequence.
Apart from the above, a vegetarian diet provides
carbohydrates in good quantities, which keeps the body in good
shape and tone, injects the required doses of energy, besides
providing the stipulated amount of vitamins and minerals,
essential for the growth and development of the human-body.
All the essential ingredients required to sustain and nourish
the human-body being present in the vegetarian diet in a
healthy, natural balance, what more could a person ask for ?
A healthy mind in a healthy body and that too without
the ill-effects of meat, fish and eggs.
The revolutionary study of the ex-health minister of U.K Ms.
Edwina Quiry on the ill-effects of consuming eggs is also well
known to everybody. Her revealing statement - “ Eggs may
cause death” continues to have a far reaching impact on
the consumption trends of eggs in England.
In the demonstration given by energy-Providing ingredients in
a vegetarian diet; dairy products leads the march. Dairy
products are also a good provider of Calcium, though vegans
have their own arguments about it. However, there is need
for purity of milk and milk products as most are adulterated.
Amino Acids, which are the building blocks, are the prime constituents of
protein. They are present in plant and as such, a mix of
various plant sources, in the form of vegetables, grains and
pulses are the ideal pattern of diet for the vegetarians.
Carbohydrates, the carriers of starch, sugar and fibres are found in plant
foods, cereals, vegetables and the list goes on. Human body is
tailor-made to be fed on a high diet of carbohydrates, ideally
not less than 55 percent of the total food intake, whereas a
non-vegetarian diet does not contain carbohydrates.
Minerals and vitamins are found in rich quantity in plants and it is to be noted
that the source of fibres are only in vegetarian foods. Dark
green Vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin along with legumes and whole grain cereals.
Plant fat differs from animal fat in two ways - firstly they are
cholesterol - free, and
secondly they generally contain more polyunsaturated fats
while they are also low on saturated fat contents.
“Nutritional science is coming of age.. No other field of
research seems to hold better promise for the prevention and
control of cancer and other illness and for securing and
maintaining human health.”-
says John Robbins in the book” Diet for a New America’,
while speaking on health and vegetarianism.
Diet control is an effective tool, when dealing with ailments
and generally medication, alone, does not help. Studies have
revealed that of the study groups, ninety five percent of the
persons, who lived on meat diets and have switched over to a
vegetarian menu, have reported to have discovered in them, an
increase in energy, vitality, and a general feeling of well being.
It is therefore imperative that we are well informed and
aware as to the ingredients of a good diet and develop a
selectiveness in our food choices, more so, because it is the
nature of our diet which contributes in
the ratio of more than seventy five percent towards the
occurrence of our ailments.
So,
in fact, Vegetarians have been found by researchers to be not
only the longest living but also enjoying full, active lives
throughout their many years and show no signs of the various
degenerative diseases that afflict meat eating culture.
