MEDICINE AND VEGETARIANISM

A
co-relation between the medical world and the world of vegetarianism is not hard to be established. There
exists bond between the two. Vegetarianism does not merely implies
avoidance of consuming meat, eggs and fish; it also signifies avoiding consumption of any part of
the body of an animal, in any from. Plenty of medicines, cosmetics and toiletries are
made from the various extracts of animal's body. Intake of
these drugs amounts to sustaining on a non-vegetarian diet and
leading a similar lifestyle. It is a pity
that a vast range of brands in medicines
containing animal extracts, have been
patented and regularly prescribed, whereas the potential in
herbs and plant extracts in formulating potent drugs, have been overlooked.
Vegetarianism also implies non-violence towards
animals and avoidance of their slaughter or torturing
them for experimentation.
Animals are being killed with abandon and their organs
are utilized to manufacture various drugs. This cruelty
towards animals is carried in, on the plea of
manufacturing life-saving drugs for the mankind, when
effective synthetic and plant-based formulations in the
form of therapy medicines are easily available.
To illustrate the above point, let us examine this scenario :
To tackle the phase of menopause in the life
of middle - aged women, doctors advise the use
of pre marine, a drug containing estrogens. Pre marine
is made is made from the urine of
pregnant mares and they are impregnated artificially or
otherwise, in large number, with the sole
purpose of manufacturing these drugs. These pregnant
mares are hooked up to "rubber
urine collection bags" and tied onto so tightly, they can
scarcely turn around or even take
a step, leave aside lying down.
Many of these animals have
been found suffering from
swelling in their abdomen
and legs, besides having oozing
wounds, blindness and infected eyes. The deriving of Pre Marin
causes thousand of mares and their foals a nightmare of suffering and eventual death.
In Order to manufacture Anti-Snake Venom Serum (ASVS),
snake venom is first injected to horse and
subsequently their blood is extracted. The process is
extremely hazardous and painful for the
animal. The anti-bodies thus produced by the animal after the
injection of the venom are used to make the serum and it
is being practiced at a state-run Institute at Chenni.
Identical is the fate of goats, who meekly sacrifice,
practically every organ of their body, for the benefit of the
allopathic science. For the benefit of diabetic patients,
Insulin is taken out from the spleen of goats,
vitamin B complex and the associated tonics
come from the said animal's
liver, foam, protein and plasma from
the blood of goats,
whereas anti-rabbi medicines from the
goat's brain. Is not the proverbial
"sacrificial goat" seeming a
reality, more and more ? Many other animals
are killed and their organs
utilized to manufacture various drugs.
Several homeopathic drugs are, as well, made from animal
extracts. Pyrozanin is made from the
juice of burnt beef; fel tari is got from
the pit of a hippopotamus; lacto dactus
maisti gets its source from black spider and the list
goes on and on. A few instances can be cited
the vast range of Homeopathic medicines which are made from
animal extracts :
|
|
|
Theridon
: made from the essence extracted by crushing live spiders.
Valpis Hepas : made from the dust obtained by cursing dried liver of fox.
Sepia
: made from the extracts of fish.
Vyunko
: made from the poison contents of from which hunt sparrows.
Pierojeniyam
: made by the juices of decayed cow meat.
Symax
: made by the crushed contents of cockroaches.
Therend
: made by the extracts from files.
Vaccinum
: made from the pus obtained from small poxes.
Vipera
: made from the poison of snakes.
Quasia
: made from insects. |

All
this inhuman act is talking place when several potent plant based estrogen replacement
therapy products are knocking on the
doors of formulating laboratories and authorities
sanctioning patents, begging them to
show a route to the chambers of practitioners, who
could prescribe these gems of nature to the suffering mankind.
Ayurvedic or plant-based medicines accompany lesser effects
than Allopathic or Homeopathic drugs.
Besides the above fact. the brand-formulations of
allopathic drugs discarded, say at an interval of every
decade or two, on the pretext of being obsolete and
redundant. New formulations are worked out and
replace the earlier ones since their effectiveness diminishes.
This eventuality arises because of the experiments,
before formulating the drug, being carried out
on animals, like frogs, rabbits, mice, pigs and monkeys
besides others, who have entirely different
biology and inner-construction than that of a human.
A vegetarian diet is very useful in easing menstrual
cramps and the treatment of liver disorders including even the final stage of liver failure.
Incidence of hypertension, diabetics and cancer can
be reduced considerably by avoiding a
meat-based diet. Vegetarianism also a plays a supportive
role in the treatment of many chronic and neurological
diseases.
"A
vegetarian diet can prevent ninety-seven percent
of our coronary convulsions. In regions where meat is scarce,
cardiovascular diseases are unknown".
The
western countries, as well, have taken a note of these
pertinent facts and are in the process of changing their
habits, doctors are advising patients to have a vegetarian
diet to ensure quick recovery and good health. Preparations
of drugs are being made from herbs and plant
extracts whereas courses in medical
educations have been incorporated with a
compulsory study of herbs, plants, and Vegetation
vis-a-vis medicinal utility.
Future of
progress in the sphere of medical science
lies in the research and development conducted
in the area of detailed knowledge
of vegetation and its applications. Our age
old knowledge can serve as guide in this regard.
